Poliomyelitis is an infectious viral diseasewhich affects the central nervous system and can cause temporary or permanent paralysis. The virus of this diseasespread by direct person-to-person contact, or contact with infected mucus or phlegm from the nose or mouth and contact with infected feces. In poliomyelitis virus enters through the mouth and nose and spread through the blood and lymph system.
This disease is caused by infection with the poliovirus. There are many causes of this disease likelack of immunization against polio andtravel to an area that has experienced a polio outbreak.
There are a lot many symptoms of this disease such as general discomfort or uneasiness (malaise), Headache, Slight fever, Red throat, Sore throat and Vomiting. Some other symptoms are Back pain or backache, Diarrhea, Excessive tiredness, Headache, Irritability, Leg pain, Moderate fever, Muscle stiffness, Neck pain and stiffness, lesion with pain orSkin rash, stiffness of arms, legs, abdomen. Spasm and Muscle tenderness andin any area of the body is also the symptom of poliomyelitis.
Antibiotics can beused to treat this disease. Medications such as bethanecholused for urinary retention. Physical therapy, corrective shoes or braces and orthopedic surgery are recommended to recover muscle strength and function.
