Pak Tea House: The Heart Touching Memories

Have you ever imagined how it feels when you are sitting in a circle of friends or among the like-minded people?. Surely the best of YOU comes out from your inner self. Thoughts are aloud, creativity runs at its original pace, heart is content, body feels vigor and you spend a purposeful and enjoyable time and before ending the session you feel sad and go home for the hope of meeting again at that place and among the same people.

 

 

 

 

The scene is of 50s. The place is PAK TEA HOUSE and people sitting there are the wealthiest people but mind it those are not Saiths or Sahookars; they are pillars of the literature. They are writers, poets, lyricists, fiction writers, critics and prose writers. They are not discussing there inflation, bank interest rates or stock exchange recession and rise. They are having a very smart and sophisticated gossips which we call Adabi Gup Shup, the exchange of witty conversation is going on there.

So this is a place on Lahore Mall Road on the corner of the road going towards Neela Gumbad which was once the center of attraction for the people relating to the world of literature. Before partition of India its name was India Tea House but after partition it was named as PAK TEA HOUSE and its owner was Sirajuddin who rented it from the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association). Many famous and national level literary figures used to come here for tea, snacks and literary exchange of information. The most famous people in them were Nasir Kazmi, Muneer Niazi, Saadat Hasan Manto, Ahmed Faraz, Ibn e Insha, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Amanat Ali Khan, Intezar Hussain, Kamal Rizwi, Mira Ji, Syed Qasim Mahmood and Dr. Muhammed Baqir. There was a literary association named as Halqa-e-Arbab-eZouq which held its meetings in Pak Tea House. There was a stamp on PAK TEA HOUSE that mostly left wing writers used to come here and it was because the members of Progressive Writers' Association came there frequently. There was a mix of people relating to youth, mainstream and less known literary figures who used to come there.

But it always happens the effect of time and commercial requirements affected PAK TEA HOUSE also and its owner decided to shut it down due to recession and decrease in business. The decision was opposed at a great level by literary circles of Lahore and the Lahore Commissioner ordered to put it under the management of YMCA (Young Mens' Christian Association.

In 2012 it was reopened on the orders of Punjab Government as it would meet its own expenses by the income generated from it. We hope that the central place for literary millionaires of Pakistan will be kept intact.
