Although Pakistan is lagging behind the developed countries regarding many fields but on the other hand it is blessed with fertile lands and weather considered ideal for the production of many fruits, vegetables and crops. According to a survey Pakistan is one of the largest mango producers in the world producing approximately 1.8 million tons every year. Mango known as the ‘King of fruits’ is one of the most eaten fruits of the world. It gives me immense pleasure to share that recently Pakistan has started exporting mangoes to China, which itself is the largest mangoes producer. Also, this year Korean importers have given approval for our mangoes quality and hopes are high that tons of it would be exported next season which would be a major breakthrough in exports of Pakistan.
Pakistani mangoes have all the desired qualities; it is much sweeter, bigger in size and tastier. Pakistani private sector has far better capacity to treat mangoes. Other exporter countries could shelve mangoes for not more than seven days whereas our private sector has ability of shelving mangoes for more than a month after treating them.
Although we are among largest producers and exporters but unfortunately India is ahead of us. Though the quality of our product is far better than India's but we lack in terms of persuasive international marketing and disciplined functioning export system.
Problems like high prices of fertilizers, pesticides and shortage of water supply have created much hindrance for growers and if the situation prevails the production will reduce further resulting in great loss. It is need of hour that Government should take interest and supports the private sector which is striving to achieve more in international market. With support of Government they can earn millions which in turn can have a very positive impact and can stabilize our economy.
