The Bullock and Ox race races have been originated from sub-continent and had been in vogue in distant past as a regular feature of rural life and still today ox and bullock races can be seen in many places of rural areas of Pakistan and India. The ox race is a show of maximum power and endurance of the oxen and also is a great test of the capabilities of the jockey who is steering the oxen with the help of a stick and which is standing on a piece of log fastened to the oxen. Oxen or bullocks are carried to the race track or race area which is a big field with great show of pomp and pride. The people gather in numbers to witness the great event. Usually the oxen are the property of different elite of the village usually called Chaudries. People are very eager to know that whose Chaudhry's oxen are going to win the event.
There is a beating of Dhol (local drum). People clap and raise slogans which shows the passion of the crowd which is now gathering along side the boundary of the field where the ox or bullock race is going to start. These races are taking the shape of professional races. The special breeds of oxen are reared just to compete in races only. The WANDA is the special cattle feed which is prepared to increase the vigor and stamina of the beasts. A special veterinary doctors engaged to look after the health of oxen and moreover they are massaged regularly for increasing the muscle power.
For race purposes a log or plank is tied to the oxen but in some cases the cart is also attached to the oxen. The carts are of special bright colors and artistically crafted. People gathered at the boundaries clap and raise loud scream as the oxen race to beat others in the field and as soon as a pair of oxen or bullock wins the race the supporters come in the field and lift the jockey on their shoulders and dance in Bhangra style and the proud owner of the oxen twists his moustaches while the losing party immediately withdraws from the fields.
The bad or negative aspect of the race according to some NGOs and animal rights activists is that the oxen are bound to use their maximum energy and it can cause the heart arrest or some other abnormality or affliction to the oxen. Sometimes sticks are pricked and different unethical procedures are adopted to make oxen run faster like pouring chilies in their eyes, pouring alcohol down their throats and afflicting them small injuries to infuriate them to make them run fast.
The fact is that these bulls are not like horses and are not meant for running or races so these should not be made to race but they can be used as useful means of transportation and field plough for which they are perfect. With the passage of time the things will be more animals and humans friendly.
