The city of Mardan is known for its hospitality. It is situated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. It is the second most populated city after Peshawar in KP. The interesting thing about Mardan is that it is the group of many small towns and together they form a big city.
Mardan Valley was once a part of old Gandhara Civilization but it was not in its present form at that time. The area consisted of sub-kingdoms situated at the hills of Jamal Garhi, Shahbaz Garhi and Takht Bhai. The ruins of those cities can still be seen. The foundation of Mardan city was laid by the Saint Ali Mardan Shah in 11th to 12th century A.D. His shrine is located at Jalala. Mardan has one of the best irrigation systems in Pakistan or in the world to be exact. The main source is Swat River.
There are a number of educational institutions in the area namely Agriculture University Mardan campus, Defence College for Girls, Mardan Cantt. Govt College of Management Sciences Mardan, Ansi degree College Mardan, Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Army College, Bacha Khan Medical College, Beaconhouse School System, The City School, Engineering University Mardan Campus and there are other number of quality educational institutions and this is the thing on which people of Mardan can really be proud of.
The worth seeing is the Batcha Khan Monument which is in the shape of a tower or Minar. It is situated at College Square. It is sixty feet high and has a ten feet basement. Mardan is actually an agricultural region. The major crops include Sugarcane, Wheat, tobacco, rice, maize, rapeseed, mustard and many vegetable crops. Fruits include plum, orange, apricot, peach, pear, apple and rare mango.
There are many canals to irrigate the lands. There are upper and lower swat canals originated from Swat river. There are also tube wells installed for irrigation as alternative.
In industries there is a sugar mill, The Pakistan Railways Factory, many cigarette making factories and many flour and paper mills. There are also soaps, marble and bricks, tiles factories. Marble mining industry is taking a boom in Mardan.
The climate of Mardan is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. Humidity exists in the region due to heavy cultivation and irrigation.
As far as flora and fauna are concerned there are number of kinds of trees and plants like, Tamarix Articulaa, spands, small red poppy, spera, drab grass, eamelthorl and Pohli Chaulai etc. A number of animals including leopard, black bear, brown monkey, wild goat, jackal and pheasant are found.
In traditional food there are chapal kababs, seekh kabab, and Qahwa is prominent. Roti made of maize flour along with Saag is very famous.
