Top Ten Ways to Control Your Anger
The Holy Quran states: Those who spend (freely) whether in prosperity or in adversity; who restrain their anger and pardon men; And Allah loves those who do good. (Chapter 3, Verse 134)
Imam Ali (as) said: "Anger is a stroke of madness, since the afflicted later feels remorse and regrets. If someone does not feel any remorse after anger, it means that his madness has become fixed."
These and many more quotes can be cited that shows the importance of controlling one's anger. Although anger is a normal human emotion, it can become highly destructive if it gets out of control leading to long-term damaging effects on your well-being and the well-being of others if it is not managed in the right manner – hence the importance given to it in Islam.
The tendency to get angry or frustrated is a mere manifestation of our inherent weakness as human being. Islam has laid stress on overcoming this weakness by waging Jihad or a Holy War on one's lower and primal instincts because what is the difference, then, between a man and an animal if he too is flies into a rage through external provocation? One needs to overcome vices so that good qualities are sown in their place.
Overcoming anger can become an easy task if you build a resolution within yourself that you WILL try to curb your anger in situations where there is a likelihood of provocation. Here are a few anger management tips that can help you overcome this deadly weakness:
1 ) The first thing to do when angry is to think over the rewards of appeasing anger, which have come from the Verses of the Quran and the Sayings of the Prophet (PBUH). Your hope for getting rewards of appeasing anger will restrain you from taking revenge.
2 ) The Prophet (PBUH) said: "When one of you gets angry, let him make Wudu (ablution) with water as anger arises out of the devil and the devil is made up of fire."
3 ) Pray regularly and trust in Allah. Say: "What reason have I got to get angry? What Allah has stored in my destiny, will occur!"
4 ) Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also states: "Shake hands and rancor will disappear. Give gifts to each other and love each other and enmity will disappear."
5 ) Try to get relaxed when you feel like flying into a rage. Take a deep breath, close your eyes and try to stay calm. The Prophet (PBUH) advised: "When one of you becomes angry while standing, he should sit down. If the anger leaves him, well and good; otherwise he should lie down."
6 ) Try to immediately recite Verses from the Holy Quran which is (Ayat-ul- Kursi ) which is in the (3rd Para, 2nd Ruku) Or else recite "I Seek Allah's Protection From The Cursed Devil" in Arabic. It will help you from speaking out expletives or harsh words.
7 ) Whenever you feel angry, try to get away from the person or situation that is making you act in a frustrating manner as soon as you can by excusing yourself. A change of environment always help.
8 ) Do some physical exercise to vent of your anger if you are unable to control it. You can also engage in some activity such as gardening, playing computer game etc to reduce your anger.
9 ) Socialize with people who are close to you and who you trust. Discuss with them your inner feelings and you will surely feel relieved. Try to see things from a different perspective especially of the person who made you angry.
10 ) Seek the root cause of the problem/situation that made you angry and set out a strategy to tackle it. Make an effort to prevent it from recurring if it is within your control.
You can combine multiple steps above to help alleviate anger. Don't hold it in, but don't blow up either. Calm yourself down and talk about it to alleviate the stresses that cause unhealthy anger.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "A strong man is not he who defeats his adversary by wrestling, but a strong man is he who controls himself at the time of anger." The Prophet (PBUH) did not get angry for any action of the world. HE GOT ANGRY ONLY FOR TRUTH.
