The Role of IMF in Pakistan

IMF stands for the International Monetary Fund. It is an international organization which came in to existence on 27^th December 1945. IMF started its work with 45 members, 29 countries signed the agreement initially and now it is an organization of 187 countries having one goal of stabilizing the assets, foster global financial corporation to help and provide loans on temporary basis to those countries who are suffering from financial imbalance.

IMF originally concerned with macroeconomics issues: poverty, payment balancing and payment adjustment. IMF was initially created as a part of Bretton woods system in the year of 1944. Later, during the Great Depression, countries raise their barriers for to the foreign trade in an attempt to improve their economy. In the year of 1947, France was the first country which borrowed the IMF. IMF also has played a great part of shaping the economy of the world by the end of World War II.

Pakistan is also one of the member countries of IMF and the organization is playing an important role in the stability of macroeconomics of Pakistan.IMF has provided direct and indirect support to Pakistan to cope with economic imbalance.Since the year of 1988, Pakistan has a crucial relation with IMF and not enjoyed good term with this lending organization. Pakistan has signed many agreements with IMF but they remained incomplete which made IMF dissatisfied with Pakistan and the organization deny lending the full amount to Pakistan.

In this regard, Pakistan has suffered many great losses on the part of macroeconomics in the year of 1990 which is called the “lost decade”.Pakistan strained the relationship with IMF in the year of 1997 due to the political instability, inefficient governments, budget discrepancy, and payment imbalance. Finally, by the end of 1999, the relationship positively improved between IMF and Pakistan due to the military government. Without any doubt, International Monetary Fund sways the policies of lending countries to a great extent.
