The Ludo is a simple board game which four people play to race their four tokens from start to finish by rolling out the dice. The word "Ludo" comes from the Latin ludo which means "I play". However, the game has its origins in ancient India. It was the 16th century Mughal Emperor Akbar, who played a game of Pachisi or Chaupar in his court with the help of cowry shells on red and white squares.

With the passage of time, different countries around the world brought about different variations to the game although the basic underlying principle of how the game is played is more or less the same the world over. Given below are the basic steps of how the game of Ludo is played:

1. Select from any one of the four colors given on the board.
2. Roll the dice. If you get the highest number, you can start the game first.
3. If you roll a 6, you can move one of your pieces from the home base to the track. If you don't roll a 6, you can't take out your piece from the base.
4. As you keep on rolling the dice, you should keep moving your piece(s) in a clockwise direction.
5. For every 6 that you roll, you get the chance to have another turn to roll the dice.
6. To reach home, you should exactly roll the number that you require to reach there. Or else, you have to move your other piece or lose your turn, if you can't.
7. You have to avoid running in to your opponent's pieces or else you go back to where you started from. Then you have to start all over again.
8. Remember, you have to send one piece of your opponent's back to the start before you reach your home.

The best part about playing Ludo is that it is always exciting as the ability to knock out one's opponents never loses its appeal. Moreover, people of all ages, from children to the elderly, can play it as it is easy to understand with not too many complicated rules involved. Playing and winning Ludo is more a matter of luck than the ability to master it as you never know when your fortunes will turn at the roll of the dice.
