Is This Cultural Backwardness or Highness in Morality?

This life has given us a right to say no and to choose freely and willfully. This very freedom also allows us the luxury of sense of right and wrong. Recently I chatted with a 54-year-old Scotsman on one of the video chatting websites. He was interested to ask me a few questions about Islam. The very first question that often pops up in minds of westerners is regarding sex before marriage. He was no different to ask me that very question.

sex before marriage Is This Cultural Backwardness or Highness in Morality?
I told him that in Islam, it is not allowed for men and women to have sex before marriage. One can only have sex if one is committed in solemn marital bond with another person according to Islamic law. He said that he does not understand any logic behind this approach and called it a cultural backwardness. I explained to him that according to Islam, sex is an intimate thing due to which for both health purposes as well as societal stability, Islam asks people to have sex only when they trust someone or are in a solemn relationship with that person, and that solemn relationship has to be marriage. Nothing short of a marital trust between spouses will do.

Furthermore, to show how Islam views sex, I told him that sex is indeed one of the sensual pleasures that God gave to humans, but that it should be practiced with moderation like all other things and not hedonistically. Since most people in the west who trumpet about freedom of self and senses do not consider themselves morally and religiously bound to any superior law of God, they can indulge their senses without pricking their conscience.
I pointed it out to him that when he will look at Islam’s line of logic on the issue, only then can he agree with it. But if he establishes any other premise to derive his own line of thought, then of course, the difference in approach will occur. What he considered cultural backwardness is in fact highness in morality preached by Islam and other religions as well.

Such differences in approach then don’t just end in thoughts, but reflect upon the whole fabric of society itself. He also openly told me that he smokes marijuana and really likes it a lot. Even though that it is illegal to possess an ounce of it, but for those running in line of pleasing and dipping their senses in tranquility they feel through it, any law does not matter, whether it be state created or God’s Law.

He was an atheist. Although atheism does not hold it in its motto to disobey the state at all, many atheists believe they are bound to no law whatsoever, as state law is human-made and following it will be bowing down to other humans’ wills. We ended up agreeing on one inimitable truth, that both religion and politics present a vast ground for rigorous debates, so for an open-minded person, all views are welcomed till they are presented tolerantly. Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance is its highest virtue. Both the West and the Muslims need to be reminded of this fact today.
